What’s New…

New Senior Housing Project in Bloomsburg

(July 22, 2010) Bloomsburg Health System and Presbyterian Senior Living of Dillsburg, PA. have been notified that the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency has awarded funding to them for a 36 unit apartment building for low to moderate income seniors on property adjacent to the hospital. Construction on the Westminster Place apartment building is expected to begin in September 2010 for one and two-bedroom apartments ranging in size from 650 to 850 square feet. Plans for the project include tax credit apartments as well as market rate senior rental apartments, and cottages. Assisted living is also being considered and space is reserved for a new skilled nursing center to complete the continuum of care.

“This is our first joint venture with Presbyterian Senior Living,” states Hospital CEO, Regis Cabonor, “and the cultures have meshed well. We are excited to offer this new level of service and are looking forward to the exceptional community and enhanced senior living opportunities that our two experienced teams will develop for Bloomsburg area seniors. These spacious apartments will compliment the continuum of care currently offered and enable us to reach out to serve people with limited resources”

According to Stephen Proctor, CEO of Presbyterian Senior Living, “Presbyterian Senior Living is pleased to work with Bloomsburg Hospital to bring this much needed project to the Bloomsburg area.  Westminster Place will be a caring community, where people with limited incomes can live in safety and security on a site which overlooks the surrounding areas and will offer spectacular views.”

Bloomsburg Health System is comprised of Bloomsburg Hospital, Bloomsburg Physicians Services, Bloomsburg Health Care Center, and Columbia Montour Home Health and Hospice.  BHS offers a broad range of services in a variety of settings to accommodate 90% of one’s healthcare needs. From complex surgeries and rehabilitation to long term care and home health services, BHS provides a lifelong continuum of care

Presbyterian Senior Living is a not for profit organization with an 82 year history of serving seniors in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and southeastern Ohio. They currently have 23 locations and serve more than 5,400 seniors daily in health care, housing, and community service operations.

Further information on the project can be obtained by contacting the Bloomsburg Hospital Administration Office at 387-2145.

Presbyterian Senior Living Receives 2009 PANPHA Award for Distinguished Service

The PANPHA Distinguished Service Awards were created to honor those special individual and group efforts that exceed the already high standard of commitment and service that is common among PANPHA members. These honorees give their time, talents, and abundant energy to their facilities and the field of aging in a way that visibly shows the commitment and dedication alive in their hearts. In 2009, PANPHA honored the outstanding achievements of 11 individuals and three group programs that have contributed to and enhanced visions for an even greater future.

Presbyterian Senior Living was honored to receive PANPHA’s “Outstanding Advocacy Award” for the bold steps our organization has taken in the past five years to advance the cause for advocacy for the senior population in Pennsylvania and beyond.

From local “Town Hall” meetings to the halls of U.S. Senate and Congress, Presbyterian Senior Living has dedicated itself to spreading the message that issues affecting seniors must be discussed, understood, and acted upon by lawmakers to reflect current needs. Beginning in 2004 with a host of Legislative Breakfasts, Presbyterian Senior Living has steadily incorporated advocacy efforts as part of ongoing organizational operations. As of 2009, there are 15 communities both in and outside of Pennsylvania that represent Presbyterian Senior Living on local, state, and federal issues. Over the course of the past five years, Presbyterian Senior Living communities have responded to PANPHA and others’ calls for action to participate in Medical Assistance hearings across the state; submitted letters to the IRRC and local and state legislators to oppose revised Pennsylvania Assisted Living regulations; and have been regular participants in both the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging’s annual visits to speak to representatives on Capitol Hill and in PANPHA’s Advocacy Day at the State Capitol.

KeyHIE Participation

Presbyterian Senior Living has become a participant in one of Pennsylvania’s largest health information sharing organizations, the Keystone Health Information Exchange (KeyHIE). The exchange is a secure network that links hospitals and other healthcare providers throughout Pennsylvania and provides seamless and secure access to health information – including diagnoses, test results, allergies and medication lists. KeyHIE formed in 2005 with the vision to improve healthcare quality and efficiency through the increased use of digital health records. A secure Web-based browser houses the information and allows clinicians to see patient information from all participating healthcare providers. As a member of the exchange, Presbyterian Senior Living is committed to respecting patients’ privacy and keeping their health information confidential.

Louse Sobke, vice president of operations and clinical services for Presbyterian Senior Living, says, “Being a part of the KeyHIE exchange helps to ensure that we are providing the people we serve with a secure record that transfers their health information to the practitioners responsible for supporting their health and wellness needs.”

Once a patient gives authorization, their healthcare team may access important health information. More than 300,000 patients have registered to participate by signing this form. The system currently contains hospitalization discharge summaries (summaries of care and clinical results while a patient is in the hospital) and other documents that contain information doctors most need to provide the highest level of patient care. In the future, more clinical information will be stored and available throughout the region. KeyHIE does not permit its services to be used for marketing or research purposes. Patient information may only be accessed by licensed providers involved in the care of that patient.
