The staff of Westminster Village in Allentown will be recognized as “everyday heroes” at the 3rd anniversary of the everyday LIFE program at noon on Thursday, May 24, at the everyday LIFE center at 2045 Westgate Drive in Bethlehem, PA. The honor recognizes the staff for their quick response in providing emergency housing for two elderly participants of the everyday LIFE program who were displaced by a fire in the Century House senior apartment building in Bangor, PA on March 16, 2012.
“You can imagine the fear and uncertainty felt by these individuals when they were forced to evacuate their apartments due to the tragically fatal nighttime blaze in their building.” stated John Paul Marosy, Executive Director of everyday LIFE. “When our social worker called the intake coordinator at Westminster Village to ask if they could possibly take in two of our participants that night, there was no hesitancy whatsoever. ‘Bring them on down’ was the immediate response. In that moment, their fear was transformed into a sense of safety and security.”
Both individuals have since moved back into their apartments in the same building. The participants and staff of everyday LIFE will present a special gift to the Westminster Village staff as part of the lunchtime celebration.
Everyday LIFE (Living Independently for the Elderly) is a comprehensive program of all-inclusive care, funded by Medicare and Medicaid dedicated to helping frail older people and their family caregivers to continue living in their own homes. The program offers all services normally covered by Medicare (including prescription drugs) plus an extensive array of long-term in-home care, as well as meals, recreation, transportation and rehabilitation services at its center in Bethlehem. There are no co-payments or deductibles for participants.
Everyday LIFE and Westminster Village are both affiliates of the Dillsburg, PA-based non-profit Presbyterian Senior Living, as is Kirkland Village in Bethlehem and the Easton Home in Easton. More information about Everyday LIFE can be found at their website www.everydaylifecenters.org
