For over 11 years, Candie Brown has been a driving force behind the creative marketing efforts at Presbyterian Senior Living. As the Integrated Marketing Coordinator, Candie combines her extensive graphic design experience with her passion for storytelling to bring PSL’s mission to life.

A Journey in Design and Creativity

Candie’s journey as a graphic designer began after high school when she attended Bradley Academy in York, PA, a two-year technical school. She quickly secured her first job at The Souza Agency, an advertising firm in Annapolis, MD, where she started as the sole graphic designer and worked her way up to Art Director.

Her career path led her through a variety of creative roles, from working with Boyd’s Bears to designing hospital communications at Memorial Hospital. These experiences gave her a well-rounded understanding of advertising, branding, and healthcare marketing—a perfect foundation for her current role at PSL.

“I’ve been fortunate to have diverse work experiences—from managing multiple clients at an agency to working in-house in the decorative arts and healthcare industries,” Candie reflects. “Each step has contributed to where I am today.”

Making an Impact at PSL

Since joining PSL, Candie has played a vital role in branding, marketing campaigns, and event promotions. Whether designing materials for Discovery Open Houses or shaping the "You Belong Here" campaign, her work directly supports sales, human resources, and the resource development team.

“My biggest contribution lies in my ability to multitask and support various teams. From flyers and signage to digital ads and web content, my goal is to ensure our materials communicate PSL’s mission effectively,” she explains.

One of her favorite projects has been event designs, where each event’s unique theme allows her to get creative beyond standard templates. “I love the challenge of making something visually engaging that attracts prospects and showcases what PSL has to offer,” Candie says.

Leadership and Mentorship

Throughout her career, Candie has been influenced by mentors who shaped her professional growth. At the Souza Agency: “This husband and wife team took a chance on me right out of college and treated me like family. Their support and encouragement allowed me to grow creatively and professionally.” On Paul McNally, Director of Marketing at PSL and Candie’s current supervisor: “He fosters a collaborative environment, encourages idea-sharing, and is a great role model for leadership.”

Candie also offers advice to aspiring designers: “Don’t let others’ opinions hold you back. If you’re passionate about something, pursue it—it can lead to a fulfilling and rewarding career.”

The Evolution of Senior Living Marketing

Over the years, Candie has seen marketing in the senior living industry evolve, particularly in the wake of COVID-19. She notes that digital accessibility and self-service options have expanded, allowing seniors and families to research housing, financial planning, and healthcare services more efficiently.

“Technology has made an impact across the board, from the rise of telehealth to how we present information online,” she explains. “For me personally, transitioning to a work-from-home setup has been a big shift, but it has proven to be effective and allows me to remain just as productive.”

A Supportive Team and Workplace Culture

One of Candie’s favorite aspects of working at PSL is the team dynamic. “We’re a small but mighty team,” she says. “Each person’s individual strengths contribute to the success of our projects. We collaborate daily to support PSL’s communities and departments, from sales to HR and beyond.”

She also appreciates PSL’s commitment to team member well-being, including the Call to Health wellness program, which helps her stay focused on both her physical and mental well-being.

Looking Ahead

Candie continues to stay ahead of industry trends by learning new software and adapting to emerging technologies to refine her skills and enhance her work.

Reflecting on her time at PSL, she emphasizes the supportive environment that has allowed her to thrive: “PSL provides the tools and opportunities for growth. I’m always given the most up-to-date technology to do my job efficiently, and I feel valued for the work I contribute,” Candie shares.

Outside of work, Candie enjoys spending time with family and friends, hiking, biking, and engaging in anything creative. She is especially proud of her daughter, her only child, who shares her creative spark, whether it’s drawing or painting. She cherishes the time they spend creating new memories.

A recent inductee into PSL’s President Club, Candie Brown remains an essential part of PSL’s marketing team, using her creativity to make a lasting impact on residents, team members, and the community.
