Cathedral Village | Community Experience
The 2026 Black Arts Festival brought residents, neighbors, families, artists, and performers to Cathedral Village September 25-27 for a vibrant three-day celebration of arts, music, culture, and community. The festival created a memorable weekend filled with connection, creativity, and inspiration.
The festival opened on Friday evening with an inspiring presentation from students and graduates of Jubilee School, a Philadelphia-based independent school dedicated to nurturing creativity, critical thinking, and community engagement. Guests learned about the school's Jubilee Voices Publishing House, which empowers students to share stories, poetry, and history through an Afro-centric lens. The discussion complemented their artwork in Cathedral Village's Top of the Stairs Gallery and provided meaningful insight into the power of education, storytelling, and cultural preservation.
Saturday's events continued with an afternoon reception in Cathedral Hall, where guests enjoyed wine and hors d'oeuvres before a performance by the renowned Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble. Founded by acclaimed bassist and composer Warren Oree, the ensemble captivated the audience with An Afternoon of Classic Jazz, featuring beloved works by John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Cole Porter, and other jazz legends. Their dynamic blend of jazz traditions, improvisation, and world rhythms created an unforgettable musical experience.
Saturday evening concluded with a screening of "Respect," the acclaimed biographical film chronicling the life and legacy of music icon Aretha Franklin. The film, starring Jennifer Hudson, offered a powerful tribute to one of America's most influential voices.
The festival concluded on Sunday with a moving performance of "I, Too, Sing America" by pianist and composer Dr. Jay Fluellen and baritone Renard Golden. Through music, poetry, and storytelling, the performance celebrated the rich contributions of black artists and reflected on themes of identity, resilience, and hope. Audience members were inspired by both performers' artistry and their commitment to arts education and community engagement throughout the Philadelphia region.
The Black Arts Festival was made possible in part through the generous support of sponsors Cozen O'Connor, Prelude Services, and Three Oaks Senior Dining, whose partnership helped bring this unique cultural celebration to life.
Beyond the outstanding performances and presentations, the weekend fostered meaningful conversations, new connections, and a deeper appreciation for the artistry and cultural contributions that continue to shape our communities.
Cathedral Village extends its sincere thanks to the artists, performers, presenters, sponsors, volunteers, residents, and community members who made the 2026 Black Arts Festival such a tremendous success. Together, they created a weekend that celebrated the power of the arts to educate, inspire, and bring people together.
