Finding Home at Westminster Woods: A Resident's Reflection

Westminster Woods  |  Community Experience

As written by Sue Esch, a resident at Westminster Woods

When my mother moved to Westminster Woods in 2003 at the age of 87, it was a decision grounded in love and practicality. My husband, Tom, and I were living in nearby Huntingdon, and we had always thought we might move to Westminster Woods ourselves - "someday." But as often happens, life moved faster than expected. Health challenges pushed that timeline forward, and in 2005, we made the move.

Looking back, I can say with full confidence: it was the right decision.

Both my mother and Tom passed away in 2010. Those final years and months were filled with many emotions, but I don't know how I would have managed them without the support and services Westminster Woods provided. The care, compassion, and community here made all the difference.

Over the years, my golden retriever, Midas, and I became part of that circle of care. For over five years, we volunteered together at The Oaks, visiting more than half of the residents every Sunday. Midas especially looked forward to those visits; he was showered with treats and often skipped dinner afterward!

Staying active in my community

Beyond volunteering, I've stayed actively involved as a longtime Independent Living resident. I've served on several resident committees, especially Building and Grounds, where we partner with the Environmental Services Department to help them see campus needs from a resident's perspective. I've also been honored to serve on both the PHPH Board and the PHPH Foundation.

Even though I've lived in Huntingdon and taught at Juniata College since 1976, Westminster Woods is the place where I've found my truest sense of community. My friends are my neighbors, and my neighbors are my friends. We live together, play together and support each other through life's joys and challenges. It is, in every sense, a shared journey.

Exceptional people at Westminster Woods

When I think about the people who make this place exceptional, it's hard to name just one. Kyle certainly comes to mind, but so do Todd, Paul, Tara and so many others. Westminster Woods attracts truly good people - both residents and team members. For many on the team, I believe what they do here is more than just a joy; it's a calling.

People sometimes ask me why I give my time, energy and resources to this community. My answer is simple: to give back. To pay it forward. Westminster Woods has given so much to me and my family: support, friendship, purpose. It's an honor to be able to return the favor.
