Health and Well-Being Across the Continuum

At Green Ridge Village, Newville, PA, health and well-being are not defined by a schedule of activities or isolated programs. Instead, they are understood as a way of life, one that evolves alongside residents as their needs, abilities, and goals change.
This belief is reflected in the community’s approach known as Health and Well-Being Across the Continuum, a framework designed to support residents physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually at every stage of aging.
This approach represents an intentional shift from what was once referred to as “Resident Enrichment.” While meaningful activities remain important, leadership recognized that true well-being extends far beyond structured programming. Amber Hurley, Executive Director of Green Ridge Village, describes the evolution “as a commitment to seeing and supporting the whole person.”
“A resident’s life encompasses far more than scheduled programs or entertainment. Health and well-being are inherently complex, just as residents’ lives, histories, passions, and needs are complex,” Hurley shared.
As residents’ needs change, so does the way well-being is supported. Programs at Green Ridge Village are thoughtfully designed to adapt across levels of care, from independent living to personal care and skilled nursing.
“We integrate well-being into care planning, daily routines, and community life,” Hurley explained. “Rather than separating wellness by department or diagnosis, we focus on continuity and familiarity as residents move through different stages of aging.”
Physically, residents are supported through adaptable movement, fitness, and therapeutic opportunities. Emotionally and socially, the focus is on connection, purpose, and choice through meaningful relationships, small-group engagement, and one-on-one support. Spiritual well-being remains a cornerstone of community life, reflecting Presbyterian Senior Living’s faith-based mission and honoring each resident’s beliefs and values—especially during times of transition.
One example of this philosophy in action is the expansion of yoga programming across the campus. With the support of a generous sponsor, Green Ridge Village introduced regular yoga classes led by a skilled instructor, quickly seeing benefits to residents’ physical strength, emotional well-being, and overall engagement.
“As participation grew, we recognized that not everyone could access the program in the same way,” Hurley said. “Instead of viewing that as a limitation, we adapted.”
Classes were modified to accommodate varying abilities and offered in more accessible locations, allowing more residents to participate safely and meaningfully. The result was increased inclusion, visible joy, and residents expressing a renewed sense of confidence and accomplishment— demonstrating how thoughtful investment directly enhances quality of life.
Hurley mentioned, “Health and well-being at Green Ridge Village are sustained through collaboration. Residents play an active role by sharing feedback and personal goals that shape programming. Families are valued partners, offering insight into residents’ histories, routines, and values, particularly during transitions.”
Team members across departments work together to ensure continuity of care and support. Team members also made gifts to support Health and Well-Being Across the Continuum (formerly known as Resident Enrichment) in 2025. Philanthropic support and community partnerships make this work possible. Contributions help fund specialized programming, guest instructors, and innovative initiatives—ensuring opportunities remain accessible, meaningful, and responsive to residents’ needs across the continuum of care.
“What excites me most is the opportunity for continued growth and innovation,” Hurley shared. “Health and well-being are not static, and as our residents’ needs and interests evolve, so do the ways we can support them.”
With continued investment and collaboration, Green Ridge Village remains committed to strengthening Health and Well-Being Across the Continuum—honoring each resident’s journey and supporting a full, purposeful life.
At its core, this approach reflects Green Ridge Village’s dedication to supporting the whole person—body, mind, and spirit—ensuring residents can live with dignity, purpose, and a strong sense of belonging at every stage of life.
