Diversity and Inclusion Training Programs benefit PSL Senior Living Communities
At Presbyterian Senior Living, dignity and respect aren't just words on a mission statement—they're lived values that shape every interaction between our diverse community of residents and team members, regardless of background, ethnicity, culture, or sexual orientation. To ensure all individuals are treated with the same dignity and respect, PSL focuses on team member training to ensure an appropriate response is given, no matter the situation.
Sage Care: A LGBTQ+ Competency Training
Over the past three years, PSL has earned the Platinum SageCare credential. SageCare is an organization that provides training on LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender, Queer, Other) aging issues to service providers, such as Presbyterian Senior Living. Sage stands for “Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual and Transgender older adults.” SageCare is the oldest and largest LGBTQ+ aging care provider in the United States. Each year, PSL takes earning this credential seriously, encouraging all team members to enroll and engage in the one-hour training program. Some examples of the training that team members have participated in over the years include:
- Creating Inclusive Communities for LGBTQ+ Older Adults
- Preventing and Responding to Bullying Between Older Adults
These courses are available to team members at any time through Relias, our online training system, which offers the ability to change the language to a handful of languages other than English. A new topic is added each year to retain the credential.
Leadership Training Series
In 2025, PSL launched a new Supervisor Excellence Series. The Supervisor Excellence Series is available to team members in all management positions on the front line and aims to assist management in effectively leading their diverse team.
Another leadership series was provided in 2024, which focused on leading different generations in the workplace.
This training focused on explaining major life-shaping events that occurred in each generation’s lifetime. For example, the Gen X generation experienced many mothers entering the workforce. Millennials experienced the “Dot Com” boom of online search engines and websites. These life-shaping events affect the way different generations communicate, their work and learning styles, and their preferences for receiving feedback.
Through this course, managers were provided with possible generational preferences and tendencies. Having this additional knowledge and information will assist managers when approaching a team member and form better lines of communication.
Spring Health Employee Assistance Program
Earlier this year, PSL launched a new Employee Assistance Program (EAP) through Spring Health. Spring Health provides mental health resources for all PSL team members. Along with providing coaching sessions, six clinical therapy sessions and a 24/7 crisis support line, the program also offers work-life guidance. Team members can speak over the phone for work-life support, browse articles or attend virtual seminars on many different topics relating to the workplace. The topics include celebrating diversity within the workplace, assistance with cross-cultural communication, and even navigating conversations on community violence and worldwide conflict.
Within Spring Health, there is a Workplace section specifically for management. This management section provides videos, articles and online courses to assist management with their diverse team. One specific course focuses on 'Neurodiversity,' a term that recognizes broad ranges in people's sensory processing, motor skills, social awareness, thought and focus. Neurodiversity includes people on the spectrum of Autism, with attention disorders, dyslexia, learning differences, anxiety and depression. The course, “Understanding Neurodiversity for Leaders,” is especially helpful for managers to take, as 10-20% of the world population is neurodiverse. This course offers managers the opportunity to evaluate their leadership style, create a helpful form of communication, build empathy and consider changes they can make to become more inclusive for their whole team.
PSL’s Commitment
As demonstrated above, Presbyterian Senior Living has a strong commitment to strengthening team member skills by providing many different trainings on diversity and inclusion. When we all feel comfortable and safe at work, we can perform to our best abilities and provide the quality service PSL is known for.
