Getting Better with Age: Ways to Grow Older with Meaning

Getting Better with Age: Ways to Grow Older with Meaning

Health & Aging

Updated from the original publication on January 29, 2026.

Growing older isn’t just about counting years. It’s about deepening joy, strengthening purpose and embracing the life you’ve built.

In a Life Plan Community, residents often discover their new home helps them gain something unexpected: aging can be one of the richest, most meaningful chapters of life. Free from the demands and routines of earlier years, they move into a season defined by intention. At PSL, older adults are not simply aging; they’re becoming better with age.

Reframing Aging: Growing Forward

The idea of retirement once meant slowing down. But step inside a Life Plan community, and that stereotype of aging quickly fades. Residents are attending fitness classes, starting creative projects, joining clubs and reigniting old interests or discovering new ones.

Communities also host on-campus cultural programs, including guest speakers, live performances, and international food tastings. A favorite event at Pine Run Village features is the monthly international celebration. Each month a different country or region is selected. Dining and entertainment work together to create an authentic meal, decorations, and a program. Residents are encouraged to share their own cultural backgrounds, making the community a vibrant and diverse place.

By connecting with local culture and celebrating the arts, residents gain a greater appreciation for the world around them and have a chance to continue exploring their cultural passions.

With so many opportunities, these residents aren't defined by age. They’re defined by their curiosity, their energy and their desire to keep exploring. For them, retirement isn’t an ending. It’s a transformation that opens new pathways and opportunities. This reframing of aging sets the tone for a lifestyle where residents thrive with purpose and possibility.

Finding Purpose in Senior Living

Purpose is one of the most important ingredients for healthy aging. In a senior living community, opportunities to live with purpose emerge naturally through connection and contribution.

For some, purpose is found in leadership, such as welcoming new residents or serving on community committees. For others, it shows up in volunteerism. For example, in 2025, Pine Run Village, Doylestown, PA, celebrated a special milestone: the completion of the 27,000th hand-craft Good Bear. Since 1989, the dedicated Good Bears Committee has been lovingly sewing bears for children in local hospital emergency rooms. What started with eight volunteers has grown into a devoted team of stitchers. Some meet weekly, others sew from home, but all are united in spreading comfort and care.

Purpose doesn’t develop just from grand actions. Often, it’s the everyday presence: checking on a friend, tending a shared garden or showing up for a weekly class. Each encounter with friends and neighbors creates a sense of belonging and purpose.

Curiosity Never Retires: Lifelong Learning and Exploration

A key part of life at a retirement community is the constant spark of curiosityAs we age, it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking we've seen it all or that we're too old to learn new patterns. But remember, curiosity knows no age limit. By staying curious, we keep our minds young, our hearts open, and our lives abundant with possibility.

Life plan communities make these moments possible through robust programming. Residents have almost-daily opportunities to explore outlets for new interests: classes, lectures, book clubs, art sessions, even nature walks.

These learning opportunities don’t just fill time. They help residents tap into creativity, strengthen cognitive health and rediscover the excitement of “trying something new.”

Building Relationships that Enrich Everyday Life

Loneliness can become a serious health challenge for older adults, but community living offers a powerful antidote. In a Life Plan community, friendships grow naturally through shared experiences, whether a daily breakfast, a yoga class or the woodworking shop.

These connections provide more than companionship. They reduce stress, inspire confidence and create a sense of belonging. Many residents say the friendships they’ve made in a PSL community are some of the strongest of their lives

The Power of Wellness for Meaningful Aging

A key part of “getting better with age” is feeling your best physically, emotionally and spiritually. Presbyterian Senior Living prioritizes total wellness through its Thrive program. Thrive Wellness, a resident-driven program, focuses on the six dimensions of wellness and promotes a philosophy of engagement, purposeful living and meaning in everyday life.

Fitness programs are designed for every level with a focus on functional fitness for everyday living. Emotional and spiritual wellness are equally valued with chaplaincy services, support groups and mindfulness and meditation workshops.

When wellness is integrated into everyday life, not treated as an afterthought, older adults feel inspired to thrive.

Peace of Mind that Sets the Stage for Growth

One of the unique benefits of a Life Plan community is the built-in security of knowing future care needs will be supported. This allows residents – and their families – to relax and focus on what brings joy and meaning today.

It also can provide comfort knowing couples can stay on one campus as needs change. Betsy, a resident at Ware Presbyterian Village, Oxford, PA, shared "My husband was going to need a nursing home, and he was able to go from the apartment to our nursing unit. It was right on campus, so I was able to be there with him every day."

Rather than worrying about "what comes next," residents fully invest in friendships, personal goals, hobbies and passions, community involvement and new adventures.

Freedom from future worries creates a powerful foundation for living with purpose.
