Celebrate Diversity Month takes place in April every year. It was initiated in 2004 to recognize and honor the diversity of the world around us. It is a time to recognize and understand our differences, while honoring the common essence of humanity. By appreciating our similarities and differences, the month aims to get people to foster a deeper understanding of others. Diversity is crucial in assuring that we can understand each other in deeper ways that help keep us humble and open to the fact that the world does not only revolve around our beliefs. It can help develop us into better people, as it increases our understanding of human nature. The importance of diversity itself can benefit us in all aspects of our lives. At PSL our goal is to embrace diversity and welcome others. We want all who come into contact with our organization to feel a sense of belonging.

March is known as National Nutrition Month and this year’s theme is “Fuel for the Future.” This can be interpreted in multiple ways. Over recent years dietitians have been fighting the negative stigma of being viewed as the “food police”. We have worked to change people’s attitudes about food as something to be feared or feel guilty about, to food being fuel and a celebration of our cultures. We educate and encourage because we want people to live not just longer, but healthier, longer lives as they age.

A good night’s rest can be hard to come by for many people, especially as we grow older. Research shows that up to 30% of the general population, and as much as 50% of seniors, suffer from insomnia. From a lack of exercise to sleep apnea, heart disease, and restless legs syndrome, there are a variety of reasons why so many of us just can’t sleep.

March is the honorary observance of National Women’s History Month in the United States, as designated in 1987 by the U.S. Congress, in recognition of women’s many accomplishments throughout history. A variety of agencies, schools, and organizations observe the month by focusing on the “consistently overlooked and undervalued” role of American women in history. Libraries and communities promote special events that emphasize the achievements of women.

If you are the caregiver for a family member, your days are likely busy with little time to spare. This is especially true if you work outside the home or are raising a family. According to the Family Caregiver Alliance, over 53 million people in this country held the role of the unpaid family caregiver in 2020. That translates to 21% of the population and an increase of 9.5 million people since 2015.
